British Girls RUNNER-UP & English Women’s Stroke Play CHAMPION

British Girls

Two weeks ago, I flew to Northern Ireland for the British Girls, which were held at Ardglass Golf Club. Ardglass Golf Club is a beautiful links course right on the ocean, with amazing views and one hole is even called “Isabella Tower”. The British Girls is actually a match play event, but first the best 64 players have to qualify over 2 stroke play rounds. During both stroke play rounds, the conditions were very tough (strong wind), which made the scores higher. I shot +6 and +1 and easily made the cut as 15thto qualify for the match play stages.

In my first match, I played against an Irish girl and I won the match on the 17thhole by sinking an 8 meter putt for birdie. That same afternoon, I won my match again on the 16thhole – which meant, I was coming back the next day to compete. This was my fourth time playing in this event and it was the first time, I made it past both matches on the first day.

My third match was against a French girl Mathilde Claisse, who is number 81 in the WAGR. During the morning match, I was never behind and I was able to win 1 up by halving the 18th. In the quarterfinals, I played against Italy’s Alessia Nobilio who is number 18 in the WAGR. She was the highest ranked player in this tournament and I know her and also Mathilde from the Junior Vagliano Teams that we were on together. I was 2 down after 6 holes, but I managed to get the match back to all square after 15. I won 16 and nailed my approach shot within 1 meter and sank my birdie putt on 17 to win the match 2 up and to continue further to the semifinals. Especially on the second match play day, it was extremely windy and it rained a lot so we had to make sure that everything got dry until the next morning.

In the semifinals, I played against an English girl and I was able to win 4up on the 16thhole. An hour later I was going into the final match against an Austrian girl. I was 3 down after 5 but managed to bring it back to all square. Unfortunately, I missed 2 shorter putts on the last few holes and lost on the 17thhole.

In the end, I placed runner-up at the British Girls and I was so proud of making it into the final. It was a great experience playing 173 holes in 7 days under tough conditions and in front of a huge crowd.

English Women’s Stroke Play CHAMPION

Right after my runner-up placement at the British Girls, I flew from Dublin to Birmingham for my next tournament, the English Women’s Stroke Play Championship. I had one day in between the tournaments where I wasn’t hitting any balls, and I just walked the course. This year the English Women’s was held at Coventry Golf Club. Coventry Golf Club is a very narrow parkland course with a lot of trees and the greens were in great condition.

I started my first round with an eagle on a par 5, holing a 4 meter putt. I was four under after nine, shooting another eagle on a par 5. I finished my first round with a 66 (-7), my lowest round ever and leading by 6 strokes. On the second day, I shot 73 (par) with four birdies heading into the last day with a 5 stroke lead. On the final day, 36 holes were played. In the morning round, I was able to shoot 7 birdies and 2 bogies to card a 68 (-5) with a total score of -12 after 3 rounds meaning a 10 stroke lead going into the final round. That afternoon, I shot 4 birdies and was able to bring home a 72 (-1), finishing the tournament with a total score of 13 under par, 11 strokes ahead of the second place.

I was very confident with my long game that week, which was key because the holes were very narrow and the greens were great to putt on and my putting was really good as well. I am so happy with winning this tournament and shooting such a low score.

The day after my win, we drove to the Ping Europe Fitting Center in Gainsborough to have a Ping Fitting with Geoff.

I played a lot of golf these last two weeks and I am pretty exhausted. Now I am really looking forward to my last week of summer vacation and then it’s back to school starting my junior year!
